According to the level of construction, especially when it comes to the motorway network, Croatian road infrastructure today can be compared to those in many European countries.
During the last ten years more than 750 km of new motorways were built, along with a dozen bypasses, some large tunnels and bridges, and more than a thousand kilometres of existing roads renewed and reconstructed. All of these accomplishments are based on the consistent implementation of development orientation practiced since the Republic of Croatia gained its independence.
Croatian Road Society – Via Vita would like to open the discussion on sustainable development in road building for the fifth time, since sustainability, in the moments of crisis, more than ever becomes a key pattern. Specifically, the level of construction of the existing network partly meets the future needs of transport demand, because of which sustainable development should, along with the network completion, be directed towards solving neuralgic points and the rational management of the existing road infrastructure.
In this respect, it is necessary to adopt a strategy of sustainable development of roads, according to which the objectives and the necessary means for its solving shall be determined.
Therefore, one of the primary objectives of the 5th Croatian Road Congress is gathering domestic and foreign experts and scientists who will exchange their acquired knowledge and experience through professional papers and research works, their contributions, discussions and proposals ensuring high-grade basis for the creation of the sustainable development strategy of roads.
